What to Expect on a 1-on-1 Photography Workshop If You Are an Absolute Beginner

Milky Way glows over rocky coast and still water at night, with dark cliffs framing a purple star-filled sky and watermark text.

You’ve got a fantastic camera. Maybe it was a generous birthday gift, or perhaps you bought it yourself with the grand ambition of capturing Devon’s rolling hills, dramatic coastlines, and wild Dartmoor tors.

But right now, that camera is sitting on a shelf.

Every time you pick it up, you look at the dizzying array of buttons, dials, and menus, get overwhelmed, and switch it right back to "Auto Mode." Or worse, you leave it at home and just use your smartphone. You’ve looked into photography workshops, but a wave of anxiety stops you from booking. You worry you’ll be surrounded by gear-obsessed experts, that you won't understand the jargon, or that you’ll hold the group back.

If that sounds familiar, we have some excellent news: Our 1-on-1 workshops are designed specifically to cure that imposter syndrome. There are no groups, no judgment, and absolutely no stupid questions. Here is exactly what a day out on the Devon landscape looks like when you book a beginner-focused, private workshop with Thorn Valley Studios.

1. Before We Even Meet: Tailoring the Day to You

Mossy forest waterfall cascades over rocks in a lush green canyon, with silky water flowing through ferns.

A private workshop isn't a rigid, pre-packaged lecture.

A week or two before your session, we’ll have a quick, casual chat via phone or email and go over the relevant information contained in out "Learn with Us" Tutorials and blogs.

We’ll talk about what you actually want to achieve:

  • Do you want to learn how to beautifully blur the water of a Dartmoor waterfall?

  • Do you want to know how to get crisp, sharp shots of your dog running on the beach?

  • Are you struggling to understand how to make an image look bright without losing the colours of a sunset?

We will also discuss your mobility and comfort. We can choose a location that requires a dramatic hike up a rugged tor, or a stunning viewpoint that is only a two-minute flat walk from the car park. You set the pace.

2. Step 1: Breaking the "Auto Mode" Habit (Painlessly)

When we meet at our chosen location, we won't immediately start hiking or speaking in complex mathematical formulas. We’ll grab a coffee, sit down, and look at your specific camera.

We will demystify the three pillars of manual photography: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO using simple, real-world analogies instead of technical jargon.

Think of your camera lens like a window with blinds. Aperture is how wide you open the blinds, Shutter Speed is how quickly you open and shut them, and ISO is how dark your sunglasses are while you look through the window.

Within the first 30 minutes, you’ll understand how these three things work together, and we will guide you into Manual mode, the step to total creative control.

3. Step 2: Hands-On Practice in a Stunning Location

This is where the fun begins...

We’ll head out into the landscape to put the theory into practice.

Because this is a 1-on-1 session, you will never have to compete with five other photographers to get your tripod in the right spot.

As we look at a scene; say, a historic stone bridge over a rushing Devon river, we will look at the back of your camera screen together.

  • We’ll experiment: We will intentionally take a photo that is "too dark" or "too blurry" so you can see exactly why it happened and how to fix it yourself.

  • We’ll focus on composition: Photography isn't just about settings; it’s about how you see the world. We’ll teach you simple rules (like the Rule of Thirds and Leading Lines) that instantly elevate a snapshot into a piece of art.

  • You hold the camera: We won't take the camera out of your hands to do it for you. We will talk you through the adjustments so that your muscle memory begins to build.

4. No Gear Snobbery Allowed

One of the biggest fears beginners have is that their equipment isn't "good enough."

Let’s put that rumour to bed right now: The best camera is the one you have with you.

Whether you are shooting on a ten-year-old entry-level DSLR, a brand-new mirrorless camera, or a compact travel camera, the fundamental rules of light and composition are exactly the same. You do not need expensive, heavy lenses to take a breathtaking photograph. We will show you how to maximise every bit of potential out of the gear you already own.
