Why I’m Not Everyone’s Cup of Tea (And Why That’s the Best News for Your Photos)

Here’s a confession you don’t hear from photographers every day: I am not for everyone. 

If you’re looking for someone who sticks strictly to a rigid, Pinterest-perfect checklist, or delivers those overly bright, heavily airbrushed photos where everyone looks like a plastic version of themselves... well, we might not be the perfect match.

And honestly? That is completely okay.

Personally, I’m a bit of a chameleon. I know exactly when to blend into the background to capture raw, authentic moments, and when to step front and centre to direct the energy.

In fact, I shift gears so completely that a lot of my peers from the music industry don't even recognise "Wedding Will" when they see me in action.

Here at Thorn Valley Studios, I’ve learned that trying to please everybody is the fastest way to create art that pleases nobody.

My name is Will Tudor, and today I want to talk about why being a bit of an "acquired taste" is actually my secret weapon, and why it’s exactly what you should want from your photographer.

The Nervous Energy of a Veteran

To give you a bit of context: I’m not new to this game. I’ve been a professional photographer since 2009. Over the last decade and a half, I’ve been lucky enough to shoot all over the world, capturing hundreds of different clients for hundreds of entirely different jobs. I’ve shot in high-stakes environments, remote locations, and everything in between.

But here is a little secret... I still get nervous before a shoot. You’d think after 15+ years that would wear off, but it doesn't. Why? Because I care deeply about the outcome. Every single shoot matters to me. Sometimes, that nervous energy and desire to absolutely nail your photos means I get a bit overly talkative, hyper-focused, or; let’s be honest, maybe even a little annoying. Sorry about that! But that’s just what happens when I'm fully invested in making magic happen for you.

The "Will Tudor" Flavour Profile

Every photographer has a style.

Mine just happens to come with a bit more edge, a lot more honesty, and zero interest in standard cookie-cutter imagery.

Here is why my approach isn't for everyone:

• I talk (a lot), I Guide, I Don't Just Say "Cheese": I don't believe in passive shooting. I’m going to talk to you, direct you, and probably crack a terrible joke to get a real, unforced laugh. If you want a silent fly on the wall, I’m going to feel like a whirlwind.

• I Chase Mood over Perfection: I love shadows. I love raw, unfiltered emotion. If a strand of hair blows across your face but the laugh you’re sharing is genuine, I’m keeping the shot. If you want pristine, studio-lighting-only perfection, my style might feel a little too "real."

• I Value Connection over Convenience: I want to get to know you. I want to know what makes you tick, what makes you laugh, and what you’re passionate about. That requires collaboration, not just a financial transaction.

Why "Not Your Cup of Tea" is a Good Thing

Think about your favourite things. Your favourite band, your favourite restaurant, your go-to outfit. Are they universally loved by every single person on the planet? Probably not.

The things we love most usually have a distinct flavour.

The Paradox of Art: When you try to be everything to everyone, you become boring. By being unapologetically myself, I ensure that the people who do resonate with my work get something truly spectacular.
