Every piece of family history carries a story, not just in the subject matter it depicts, but in the life it has lived over the decades.

We recently had the privilege of working on a digital restoration project for a client in South Devon involving a technical architectural or maritime drawing from the nineteen fifties, a piece titled "Herring Drifter / Scottish Lugger" detailing the Bonnie Jean Loch Fyne Skiff.

The Original Condition

Initial Condition

Created over seventy years ago, the original hand drawn plan had been mounted in a handmade wooden frame.

Crucially, it had spent its life displayed without protective glass.

Decades of exposure to ambient air, light, dust, and humidity had taken a heavy toll.

As shown in the initial condition photos, the paper had yellowed and faded significantly, severely dulling the delicate ink work, handwritten lettering, and fine line drawings of the vessel.

Original State Challenges

Restoration Goal

Exposed to air without glass protection

Version 1: Sympathetic aged tone restoration as if preserved behind glass

Faded line-work, text, and artwork details

Version 2: Cleaned up modern minimalist high contrast digital master

Surface staining and tone degradation

One hundred percent manual clone stamping and digital re inking with zero AI filters

The Restoration Approach: Craftsmanship Over Automation

The client had two clear visions for the final outcome:

  1. A Sympathetic Historical Restoration: Recreating how the drawing would look today had it been protected behind glass from day one, preserving its warm vintage paper character while reviving contrast and clarity.

  2. A Modern Minimalist Print: A pristine high contrast black and white architectural finish suitable for contemporary framing.

To honour the authenticity of this original nineteen fifties piece, no automated AI image generation or quick fix filters were used.

Every single line of the hull construction, the delicate rigging, the cross sections, and the handwritten notes ("Loch Fyne Skiff 'Bonnie Jean' TT 117") was meticulously restored by hand using targeted clone stamping, tone curve adjustments, and manual detail reconstruction.

The Final Results

Sympathetically restored version with modern frame mount to match original.

1. The Warm Archival Finish

The first version restores the subtle golden parchment tone of the vintage paper while lifting the faded ink lines back to prominent clarity.

Mounted in a modern black deep set frame with a crisp white mat, it preserves the nostalgic character of the original drawing in a display ready format protected for generations to come.

2. The Minimalist Technical Artwork

Minimalist Technical Artwork resized, mounted and reframed.

The second version completely strips away decades of paper discolouration to isolate the hand drawn ink work against a bright clean background.

The result is a sharp architectural piece that highlights the precision of the original draftsman's hand.
