Finding Wonder Right on the Doorstep: An Autumn Walk Through Goodstone Woods

It is funny how we can live mere minutes away from something extraordinary and remain completely unaware of it. We get caught up in familiar routines, walking the exact same loops and travelling to distant destinations for weekend escapes, all while hidden sanctuaries sit quietly just down the road.

Yesterday was a gentle reminder of how rewarding it is to break that pattern.

Literally five minutes from our doorstep near Bickington in Devon lies Goodstone Woods. We set off on foot, heading from Bickington towards Sigford, stepping into an autumn landscape that felt entirely detached from the noise of daily life.

The Golden Glow of Autumn

There is a distinct atmosphere to the woods at this time of year. The canopy turns into an intricate vault of copper, gold, and deep amber, filtering sunlight into soft, warm beams that illuminate the path ahead.

Crossing over a simple wooden footbridge nestled in the trees, you instantly feel the shift in pace.

The light pouring through the leaves creates a quiet, almost enchanted doorway into the forest. Leaves rustle underfoot with every step, and the air carries that rich, earthy scent unique to mid autumn.

Moving Water and Slowing Down

Following the trail along the River Lemon from Bickington towards Sigford opens up one of the most soothing soundscapes nature has to offer.

The water winds past moss covered roots and smooth river stones, sweeping along fallen leaves in its current.

Getting low to the water edge, watching the cool stream blur softly past golden amber reflections, puts everything back into perspective.

Taking a monochrome view of the same wooden bridge highlights the structural lines against the organic texture of the riverbed below.

It is a subtle reminder of how stopping to look at a familiar scene from a different perspective, whether changing your lens or taking a black and white view, reveals details you might otherwise walk right past.

Nature, Wellbeing, and Local Discovery

We often talk about getting away to recharge, but our walk through Goodstone Woods showed that genuine restoration does not require a long journey.

Stepping into the woods immediately engages the senses:

  • The Sight: Sunbeams piercing through bent, ivy draped tree limbs arching over the water.

  • The Sound: The rhythmic rush of the stream blending with the soft whisper of wind through the remaining canopy.

  • The Atmosphere: A natural stillness that invites your mind to quiet down and simply exist in the present moment.

As the stream bends deeper into the woodland shadow, bathed in gentle dappled light, you realise how grounding a simple local walk can be for your mental wellbeing.
