The Eye Behind the Lens
“I have held many titles in my life, soldier, traveler, archivist. But the thread that has permanently woven them together is that of a photographer.”
Born in Plymouth, my obsession with archiving moments began in the 1980s with a humble Kodak Disc camera. Since that definitive spark, photography has remained my constant companion, an intuitive anchor, and an escape from the pressures of high-stakes environments. A lens accompanied me across the globe during active duty in both the British and United States Armies, just as it captured the vast, cinematic American landscape unfolding from the cab of a cross-country semi-truck.
The turning point arrived in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. A formative encounter with the American photographer Scott Church crystallised a profound truth: what I considered a passion was, in reality, a calling. Returning to the United Kingdom, I stepped entirely into my craft, launching my full-time studio career in 2009.
Driven by an unrelenting personal vision, my imagery quickly commanded attention far beyond local borders. Rather than following a traditional academic route, I allowed the raw quality and emotional resonance of my work to speak for itself. That dedication ultimately carried my fine-art pieces onto the walls of prestigious international galleries, including Salon Varna, Tate New York, and the Saatchi Gallery.
Today, my work is sought after by major global media outlets, corporate institutions, and discerning private clients. My features span National Geographic, the BBC, MSNBC, Country Living, Countryfile, Horse & Hound, and every major UK national newspaper, alongside extensive global advertising campaigns. In October 2020, the studio evolved under a unified name: Thorn Valley Studios, a reflection of the expanding depth and scope of my visual work. It was during this same period of reflection that I immersed myself in the meticulous, pixel-by-pixel discipline of digital photo conservation, mastering the heritage art of restoration to grant faded, damaged histories a second lease on life.
